Story goes that in the 70's ElectroHarmonix decided they wanted to 'modernise' the transistor based Big Muff Pi and developed an IC based one. It didn't sound the same, much more brash and in your face and in they end they reverted to the tranny design, however the IC version has a great sound of it's own, pretty aggressive and punchy. Sounds great on bass too.
