India achieved a major milestone in its journey towards self-reliance with the recent extraction of the first oil from the Krishna-Godavari (KG) Block by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). ES Ranganathan, former Director at GAIL, hailed this as a crucial step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat, reflecting ONGC's expertise and India's commitment to energy independence.
"This significant beginning of oil extraction from the KG deepwater block, located about 35 kilometers off the coast of Andhra Pradesh in the Bay of Bengal, marks an important achievement," stated ES Ranganathan. He highlighted that this development comes from the 'M' field within the KG-DWN-98/2 block.
ES Ranganathan emphasized that this achievement contributes a substantial 7% to both national oil and natural gas production. "This success further solidifies India's position as the world's fastest-growing economy," he added.
ONGC utilized advanced technologies and innovative approaches to tap into the untapped potential of the KG Block, showcasing India's strides in research and development. "Advanced seismic imaging, state-of-the-art drilling techniques, and efficient reservoir management were crucial for this successful extraction," explained ES Ranganathan.
He mentioned the challenges faced in the KG-DWN-98/2 block, particularly with the waxy nature of the crude oil, which were overcome using innovative 'Pipe in Pipe' technology—a first in India. This initiative underscores ONGC's commitment to enhancing India's capabilities in the energy sector through cutting-edge solutions, contributing significantly to the country's progress in research, development, and the adoption of modern technologies.
