The recent involvement of major companies like Reliance Industries, Adani Group, and Indian Oil in setting up compressed biogas (CBG) plants is a big step towards a sustainable and eco-friendly energy future. “There are several impressive biogas projects in India that highlight the potential of this technology,” said ES Ranganathan.
One notable example is the ‘Delhi Milk Scheme Biogas Plant,’ where dairy waste is used to produce biogas. This reduces waste disposal problems and energy costs for the dairy. “This project shows how biogas technology can be successfully implemented on a large scale in urban areas, addressing both waste management and energy supply challenges,” ES Ranganathan added. With successful projects and positive examples, biogas is proving to be a viable solution for India’s energy needs while also reducing environmental impacts.
In recent years, there has been significant technological progress in biogas plant design and operations. New advanced anaerobic digesters, like continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) and plug-flow digesters, have greatly improved the efficiency of biogas production. These modern digesters break down organic matter more effectively, leading to higher biogas yields from the same amount of feedstock. Additionally, pre-treatment techniques like mechanical sorting and enzymatic hydrolysis have sped up the decomposition process, making biogas production more efficient and cost-effective.
