Hippocampus abdominalis, commonly known as pot-bellied seahorse or pot-bellied seahorse, is a species of seahorse belonging to the family Syngnathidae. It is endemic to the waters of southern Australia, including Tasmania and New Zealand. Like other seahorses, seahorses swim relatively slowly. They use their long snout to suck in small prey, and males of this species have pouches to carry fertilized eggs and provide nutrition until they hatch. The seahorse seahorse is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They face threats such as habitat degradation, coastal development, pollution and incidental catch in fishing gear.
